Senior Portrait Style Guide
Make the most out of your senior session by styling your look from head to toe! A styled look can take your senior portraits from good to great, and I’m here to help!
A Few Helpful Hints
Neutrals Are A Yes!
When in doubt…go for neutrals. In the variety of landscapes in DeKalb County, a neon yellow top or large floral print could potentially clash with your settings, so let’s compliment it instead!
Neutrals aren’t limited to just black or white; try cream, gray, navy, taupe, or even olive green! You can get creative with fabric textures or unique silhouettes.
I always suggest avoiding anything too trendy. Halter tops and low-rise baggy jeans are cool now, but in 10 years you’ll cringe every time you see your portrait hanging up in your mom’s hallway. That also goes for jewelry and shoes (can you tell I went to high school when statement necklaces and chevron were thing?)
If you’re still dedicated to do a super trendy shoot…you do you! Just make sure to allow a little extra time for a few “mom-approved” photos.
Consider Your Locations
This goes for looks and functionality! If we’re frolicking in a field of wildflowers or hiking in Rock Cut, you’ll want to wear shoes you can stand in (and maybe bring an extra pair for walking).
I always encourage my clients to pick locations that vary in style, so each location has a different look. If you’re shooting in a neutral location like a dirt road, a concrete parking garage, or your average park, feel free to dress up a bit and be more playful with your outfits.
If you’re in a vibrant and busy location, like a mural, cityscape, or in a forest, you’'ll want to dress more neutral.
If you’re ever unsure, ask your photographer!
Always consider functionality
You want to be your most comfortable self during your photoshoot, because it’s going to produce the best results! Would you rather have an adorable candid of you twirling and having fun, or have stiff posed photos because you can’t move in a leather tube dress and heels? You decide!
Flowy clothing can add movement and make things fun, you just always want to consider wind and length. A good general rule of thumb: wear clothing that you don’t have to adjust every 5 minutes.
Lots of my clients wear heels for an elevated, sophisticated look, and I love that! I suggest wearing heels that you’ve practiced wearing before, and bring a flat option just in case the location ends up conflicting with the shoes! Dirt + stilettos = no bueno.

The White Dress
Ugh…I love a white dress. I’m not saying you have to wear a white dress…but you totally should! A well-fitting white dress with neutral sandals or low heels is a killer look, especially anywhere with gardens, or pretty architecture. If you’re a girly girl, get the white dress.
The Dainty Printed Dress
This can border on “trendy”, but these romantic dresses are fun, sweet, and have just enough pattern without being too overwhelming. Pair with white shoes for a more casual look.
Nice Top + Jeans
This may seem like a simple and obvious combo, but it’s so customizable! You can choose anything from a basic white top to a patterned blouse, and jeans can range from wide leg to baggy, black to blue to white, and everything in between! Keep your shoes and accessories simple, or make them bold to show your unique style! I always suggest pants over shorts and skirts, because of mobility and posing options.
Pro tip: Bring hats, shoes, and jackets to switch up the look without needing to change
College Crewneck
This cute look can work for both high school and college graduations! Use a retro crewneck to show your school spirit or announce your future plans!
The Fun Stuff
If you want your senior photos to be unique and over-the-top, these outfit ideas are for you.
The Show Stopper
If you have a fun and bubbly personality, this is the look for you! Wear disco booties, a vibrant pantsuit, or a poofy dress! These work best in an urban cityscape.
Want something glam but not over-the-top? Pair a feathery cami with silk or leather wide-leg pants in neutral colors.
Bohemian Countryside
One of the beautiful parts of the Midwest is the agriculture. I took my own seniors in front of my dad’s barn, and half my classmates had tractors in their photos. You can really lean into the country look with some western flare. Don’t forget the boots, the hat, and a fun belt or 4-H jacket.
The Gown
So you buy this beautiful, expensive prom dress…and then you only get to wear it once? No thanks! You can also rent gowns for a glam look without the commitment.
Hopefully this gives you some guidance on how to style your looks for your senior session, and maybe some fun new ideas.
